International Collaborative Art Projects
PEER-TO-PEER PARTNERSHIPS
MY GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP WITH STUDENTS IN A REMOTE VILLAGE IN SOUTHEASTERN UGANDA IS, WITHOUT QUESTION, THE MOST FULFILLING WORK I'VE EVER DONE AS A TEACHER. GLOBAL VILLAGE CONNECT HAS FACILITATED LIFE-ENHANCING PROJECTS THAT HAVE IMPACTED THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN HERE AND IN UGANDA. AS A DIRECT RESULT OF OUR COLLABORATION, GRADUATION RATES IN THE VILLAGES WHERE WE PARTNER HAVE INCREASED 236%. MY STUDENTS KNOW THAT THEY CAN HELP CHANGE THE WORLD.

VISUAL LITERACY~The 4 F’s of Photography

A partnership with Olympus cameras resulted in a visual literacy workshop where students in Uganda captured images of life in their village using technology they had never been exposed to before. The next photo was taken by a student at Buppala Primary School who had never used a camera before this collaboration. The image speaks for itself!
This photo was taken by a student in Uganda who had never handled electronic equipment before this day. The class was introduced to the 4 F’s of Photography: Frame, Focus, Follow-through, Flash/light.
PEACE FLAGS
Creating tie-dyed flags is one way my students collaborate with children in Uganda. The beauty of this project is the anonymity of the artists. It’s difficult to distinguish which flags were made by students in the US, and which were made by Ugandans who were experiencing their first art project in school. The flags decorate the school farm which feeds the students in Uganda each day they attend school. Sometimes we decorate the flags with curriculum content to supplement the classrooms in Uganda which tend to lack any decoration or information that is commonly found on the walls of classrooms in the US. The Ugandan students personalize Peace Flags which hang in my school and feature images and vocabulary in Lugandan.
Tie-dying with students here and abroad has proven to be a joyful collaboration. It’s difficult to distinguish where or by whom the flags were made…the sign of a beautiful and fruitful collaboration.
