We’re in the swing of things now. There are fewer glitches, and more awareness of how to live life as a middle school community. In 418, we’ve been exploring self-esteem and what it means to have a growth mindset. When you wander through the halls, you pass messages of encouragement crafted in haiku form by some of the members of Team Yellow. Sometimes, those 17 syllables are just enough to make you remember that we’re here to learn and grow, and that building our brains means that you have to struggle sometimes. We’re learning how to analyze the characters in the book we’re reading together (Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick), and we’re noticing how a kid’s self-esteem is reflected by how s/he behaves. And our hallway is illuminated by a wall full of Identity One-Pagers that illustrate our passions and dreams and fears. In a nutshell, it’s pretty fun to learn together.
